I would like to factory data reset my phone from the Settings menu. But, when I tap the Reset phone option, I always get a prompt to enter the Mi account password. As I’m not the first owner of this phone, I don’t know the password for this Mi account. How can I reset my phone?
Answer:
If you’ve decided to factory reset your phone, you can try doing so via the Recovery mode. Here’s how:
Note: Following the steps below will delete all the data and settings on your phone.
- Power off your phone.
- Press the Power + Volume Up buttons at the same time until you see the Mi logo.
- Use the Volume button to move the highlight to English, and then press the Power button to select.
- Select Wipe & Reset.
- Select Wipe all data.
- Confirm to wipe all data by selecting Yes.
- When it’s done, select Back > Reboot.

Have you got your mi account sign in to your phone? If yes, you can go to the web-based Mi Cloud https://i.mi.com/ to factory reset your phone.

I am unable to change password . Screen got locked after 5 seconds from there i am able to login , but when it comes to password change or try others ways to lock then it’s not accepting password . . During confirm password it’s “Next” button is not working i.e. it’s inactive where as “Cancel ” button is working .

What model of Xiaomi phone are you having? Does your phone support fingerprint? Have you updated your phone to run the latest software? Are you still able to get to the Lock screen & password to change your lock screen password?
Before changing the password try changing the sleep to a longer duration.

When I tried to boot in recovery mode, it didn’t show menu to wipe out data but only the image of phone and usb cable with pcsuite link.

Some Xiaomi models have removed the mi recovery that’s why you don’t get that option. Having said that, Xiaomi has recently added back the mi recovery mode to some of the models for example Redmi Note 4. Try update your phone software to the latest version to see if you can get the mi recovery.

I personally experienced as long as 10 mins. But I read some waited for 15 minutes or so. You can do a research on en.miui.com for the model of Xiaomi phone you’re having to get a better indication.

Redmi Note 4 has removed the recovery mode previously. If you’ve upgrade your phone to run the latest software MIUI 8.5.4.0, the recovery mode has been added back. You can then follow the steps below to factory reset your phone.
1. Power off your phone.
2. Press the Power + Volume Up buttons at the same time until you see the Mi logo.
3. Select Wipe Data > Wipe All Data.
4. If you’re prompted for a confirmation, select Confirm.

Do you know what password? Any writing on the password prompt? Where did you get this phone from? If it’s a brand new phone, it shouldn’t prompt you for a password. Maybe you want send it back to shop/place to seek help.

There are videos on youtube that show you how to bypasss the mi password sign in screen. Personally, I haven’t tried it before, you might want to give it a try.

Mi account username is either your email address or phone number.

I’m not sure what mi number you’re referring here. If it can’t be turned on then it could be a hardware problem. If it can be turned on by stuck in the boot loop or anything then it could be the software corrupted and you can try reinstalling the software. You can download the software (firmware) based on your phone model here http://en.miui.com/download.html. The installation guide (flashing guide) are available to show you how to install the software. If after going thru the guide and you find it too technical, you can always send it to the nearest Xiaomi service center for help.

as far as I know you can’t disabled the privacy protection once you’ve turned it on except factory resetting your phone.

I’m not too sure what did you mean by remove mi cloud. When you factory reset your phone, it will remove everything including the mi account that you’ve sign in.

I tried checking on https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager as per your earlier forum conversation tried to use temporary password in LOCK session but there is no option to provide the temporary password there.. all we see is Recovery message and Phone number. ( but i tried logingin with my friends phone who is user Readmi 4 , he has an option for new and confirm password in the same option).
Please help to get an option to unlock the phone without erasing the datas.thanks for your support in advance.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, the only way to reset the screen lock password is by factory reseting your phone or reinstall the firmware. Both methods will erase all your data.

Here’s the guide to change it back to English:
1. Open the Settings app. (The icon with the Gear pic.)
2. On the Settings menu, tap the 18th option for Additional settings.
3. Tap the 2nd option for Language & input.
4. Tap the 1st option for Language.
5. Here, select English.

Power button + Volume + means pressing the Power button and the Volume Up button at the same time.
Before you follow the instructions above, you need to know that the above steps are written for Xiaomi phone running the old MIUI 7 (the current version is MIUI 8). Also, some newer models no longer offer recovery mode, therefore the above steps are not applicable to these phones.

The child mode password is using the Privacy protection password. Did you key in the privacy protection password? I’m not sure which mode of phone you’re having some latest models of Xiaomi phones don’t have recovery mode which means pressing the Power and Volume + doesn’t bring you any where.
If your intention of getting to the recovery mode is to factory reset your phone, you can do it from the web based Mi Cloud instead. There, you can remotely issue a Wipe command. Of course, you’ll need your Mi account sign-in to your phone.

I’m not sure why, but some latest models of Xiaomi phones don’t come with the recovery mode anymore. You’ll need to reinstall the software or wipe the device from the web-based Mi Cloud.

Already done the suggested steps…but now it’s asking for password to verify mi account and activate the device and we don’t know the password we have reset the password but still its showing the error message…The main problem is this that we don’t know the password,and nothing is happening at all help us as soon as possible. Please just suggest us some other ways to reset the password that would work..

That should be your Mi Account password not the phone password.
